One local path - click for map - surrounds the golf courses south of the Los Angeles River and north of Burbank Blvd. Part of it parallels the bike path along Burbank Blvd. There are often rabbits along the path and herons bringing food to their young in the bordering tree-tops. Pictures below.
Also Sepulveda Dam Recreation Area waterfowl viewing from the L. A. Times 2/23/13. Suggested walk with map: "Near the junction of the 405 and 101 freeways, in the green space below the Sepulveda Dam, is a haven for many species of winged wildlife. Nearby are a hidden Japanese garden, an archery range and a string of cricket pitches." Occasionally areas are closed due to fires.
